Dominant CA Johnson boys basketball heading to Class A championship game
A big second quarter has the CA Johnson boys basketball team one step closer to a state championship.
The Green Hornets outscored Horse Creek Academy, 28-5, in the second quarter and went on to an 81-51 victory in the Class A Upper State championship game at Batesburg-Leesville High School.
“It feels great,” CAJ Johnson head coach Robert McCray told The Columbia Star after the game. “I can’t ask for a better place to be, a better school. I am so proud of the fellas, proud of the community for coming out to support us. We got one more.”
CA Johnson plays Bethune Bowman in the state championship game at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia. It is the first title appearance since winning it all in 2014.
The Green Hornets lost in last year’s state semifinals but rolled into the title game with wins over Abbeville and Horse Creek.
Javarious Wyche scored 23 points and Tony Odom added 20, including six 3-pointers for the Green Hornets. Jacob Walker-Hair added 13.
CAJ led 19-13 after the first but went into halftime up 47-18.
