State champs! Heathwood Hall girls edge Porter-Gaud for lacrosse title
After coming up short the last two seasons against Porter-Gaud, Heathwood Hall girls lacrosse broke through Friday night.
The Highlanders defeated the Cyclones, 8-6, to win the SCISA girls lacrosse title. Heathwood lost to P-G the previous two seasons in the playoffs and were 0-13 against the Cyclones heading into the season.
But the Highlanders defeated the Cyclones three times this year with the final one giving them the elusive state championship.
Sophia Turner led Heathwood (16-2) with three girls while Everette Pope and Juliana Angus each had two. Sofia Genovese also had a goal.
The game was tied 2-2 but Pope and Angus combined to score three goals in the final 30 seconds of the second quarter to lead 5-2 at halftime.
P-G got within 7-5 before Turner scored late in the third quarter to make it 8-5.
