Two days after its baseball season ended, Gray Collegiate found its next coach.

Former Oceanside Collegiate and current Mountain View Prep Richie McCullough will be the War Eagles’ new baseball coach. He replaces James Adams, who was the interim coach this year after Matthew Hornsby stepped down right before the season. Hornsby is now the inaugural coach at American Leadership Academy in Blythewood.

McCullough was the first coach in the new Mountain View Prep’s history and spent two seasons there. MVP is a public charter school in Spartanburg. Mountain View went 22-7 this year, won a region championship but lost in the district playoffs.

Before MVP, McCullough led Oceanside Collegiate, a public charter school in Mount Pleasant, to back-to-back state championships 2022 and 2023 and a 55-9 record. The 2023 championship win came against Gray Collegiate.

Gray went 22-5-1 this year and won the Region 5-4A championship before losing to North Augusta in the Class 4A District A championship. The War Eagles are moving up to Class 5A next year and will be in the same region with Blythewood, Spring Valley, Ridge View and Sumter.

Gray also announced that Brookland-Cayce’s Alan Alvarez will be the school’s new track-and-field coach. Alvarez has been the head coach at B-C for one season and assistant coach there from 2023-25. He also was an assistant coach at White Knoll from 2018-21.

Assistant Ariel Allison was promoted to the War Eagles’ head cross country coach.
