Bitter end: Chapin boys soccer drops title game to Eastside in OT thriller
Eastside prevented a Chapin soccer championship sweep in a marathon match that didn’t end until early Sunday morning.
Goalkeeper Brandon Jaramillo stopped the final two shots in penalty kicks as Eastside defeated Chapin 1-1 (3-2 in PKs) to win the Class 5A Division II Boys Soccer Championship at Memorial Stadium.
The match didn’t end until 1:39 a.m. The championship is Eastside’s seventh and first since 2022 when it was in Class 4A.
After the match, Chapin players were sprawled out on the field with many of them in tears. Head coach Bob Taylor and the Chapin coaches tried to console their grief. Then, Taylor went one by one putting their runner-up medals on the veteran squad, which had 13 seniors.
“I hate it for these guys because they work so hard and couldn’t ask for a better staff,” Taylor said. “These kids do everything we want them to do. We just came up short tonight.”
Chapin finished the season at 18-5 with all of its losses coming in penalty kicks.
Chapin was trying to sweep the championship weekend for the school. The girls team defeated Eastside, 4-0, earlier in the evening. The Eagles accomplished the sweep once before when both teams won championships in 2016.
Because of weather delays, the match didn’t start until almost 11 p.m. Both teams opted to play at the late hour instead of rescheduling for another day. The Chapin boys spent the day hanging out at the school and watched other soccer championships, played cards and relaxed before arriving at Memorial Stadium just before halftime of the girls match around 9:15 p.m.
Both teams came out energized and playing at a fast pace. Eastside scored first as Ryder Martin headed in an Asher Martin pass to make it 1-0 in the 16th minute.
Chapin tied it at 1-1 when Lucas Rogers nailed a penalty kick on the right side of the net in the 31st minute.
From there, Chapin had plenty of chances but couldn’t capitalize on them as the match headed to overtime.
“We came back after the goal down and really showed resilience,” Taylor said. “We just couldn’t finish in the end.”
After 30 minutes worth of overtime periods, it went to penalty kicks. Chapin led 2-1 after three rounds of penalty kicks. Sam Szarkawski and Cole Keys converted on their PKs and goalkeeper Cooper Hughes made two diving stops.
But Eastside’s Frazor Kazian and Hunter Kazian connected on their two penalty kicks. After a Chapin miss, Jaramillo made a diving save to his left on Gabe Sansbury’s shot to seal it.
“Saving that penalty kick was just so surreal,” Jaramillo said. “It is a game-ender you dream about as a kid. And it is unbelievable I get to live it.”
