Chapin, Saluda win championship openers. Rain delays Class 4A title games

The Chapin baseball team and Saluda softball team opened up their state championship series with victories Wednesday.

Chapin went on the road and defeated TL Hanna, 7-3, in Game 1 of the best-of-three Class 5A Division II series. Game 2 is at Chapin on Thursday.

Saluda defeated Chesterfield, 7-1, in Game 1 of the best-of-three Class 2A series. The Tigers will look to clinch the series at Chesterfield on Thursday.

Chapin 7, TL Hanna 3

Drew Greer had three hits and drove in five runs in the Eagles’ series-opening victory.

Chapin is a win away from its first state championship since 2016.

Chapin trailed 2-0 going into the fourth inning. But Greer’s two-run single with one out tied the game 2-2.

Greer put the Eagles ahead in the sixth with a two-run single to make it 4-2. Chapin added three more in the top of the seventh. Reese Jolley and Greer had RBI singles in the inning.

Charlie Todd and Weston Plotner each had two hits for Chapin.

Mac Berry picked up the win for Chapin, allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out eight in five innings. Cooper Derrick pitched the final two innings for the save.

Saluda 7, Chesterfield 1

Miller Martin struck out 13 and Amy Sorcia drove in four runs in the Tigers’ series-opening win.

Saluda is a win away from the program’s first state title. The Tigers lost in the finals last year.

Martin pitched a complete game and allowed an unearned run on two hits.

Sorcia had a three-run triple in Saluda’s four-run second inning. She added another RBI single to make it 6-1 in the fourth inning.

Martin, Kamryn Campbell and Aubrey Marnati each had two hits for Saluda.

Class 4A baseball, softball openers washed out

The start of the Class 4A baseball and softball championship series were delayed by rain.

The 4A softball series between Gray Collegiate and AC Flora was halted in the fourth inning with Gray up 3-1. The game will be resumed Thursday at Gray, starting at 6 p.m. Game 2 will be at AC Flora on Friday.

Peyton Reed was 2 for 2 with an RBI, and Aspen Boulware also had an RBI for Gray. Cameron Crook had an RBI for AC Flora.

The start of the 4A baseball series between Airport and AC Flora was postponed for a second straight game. The teams were on the field for the national anthem when a lightning delay lasting more than an hour preceded rain at Falcon Field.

Game 1 will now be played at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Game 2 is set for Airport at 7 p.m. Friday.
