High School Notebook: Basketball tournaments getting underway

Four preseason basketball tournaments or jamborees will be held in the Midlands over the next week.

Flora Girls Tip-off Tourney: The tournament will be held Saturday through Tuesday, and be played at the school’s old and new gyms. The championship and third-place game will be held Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Teams in this year’s field are Blythewood, Irmo, Sumter, Spring Valley, Lower Richland, Lexington, Newberry and host A.C. Flora.

Admission is $8 a day or a three-day pass for $20.

National Guard Showcase: The National Guard Showcase will be held at Blythewood on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m.

Each game is two quarters at the matchups are: Hammond vs. Spring Valley; Westwood vs. Lancaster; Keenan vs. Irmo; Blythewood vs. Richland Northeast.

Admission is $5.

Lake Murray Tipoff: Event will be held Wednesday through Friday at three different locations.

The first two days, games will be played at Lexington and White Knoll. The final day’s games will be at Chapin.

The field for this year’s event includes Chapin, Northwood, Lexington, C.A. Johnson, Aiken, Blythewood, White Knoll and Dreher.

Lower Richland Thanksgiving Tip-Off: The inaugural event will be held Monday through Wednesday. The first two days will be played at Lower Richland and Airport, and the final day at LR.

Teams in the field are River Bluff, Gray Collegiate, Westwood, Fort Mill, 22 Ft Academy (Greenville), Science Hill (Tennessee), Airport and Lower Richland.

White Knoll players sign with schools

Four White Knoll baseball players and four volleyball players signed their letters of intent in the early fall signing period.

The WK baseball players signing were Calev Grubbs (Lander), Steven Estep (North Greenville), Austin Davies and Zach Driggers (Erskine). Grubbs and Estep were all-region performers for the Timberwolves.

The volleyball signees were Logan Windsor (Charleston Southern), Nickie Moore and Kassie Burkett (Converse) and Sydney Pigage (King). All four were part of the Timberwolves squad which made it to the Class 4A Lower State championship.

Windsor and Pigage were all-state selections and Windsor was picked to play in the North-South volleyball match.
