Hammond hoops ranked No. 16 in MaxPreps poll
Coming off its first championship in the Chick-fil-A Classic, the Hammond boys basketball team is getting some national attention.
The Skyhawks are ranked No. 16 in the latest MaxPreps High School Basketball poll released Thursday. Hammond is 9-0 on the season and has won 26 straight games dating back to last season.
“It set the tone pretty good,” Hammond senior Seventh Woods said Tuesday after defeating Greenforest in the title game. “We got the Greenville tournament coming up and then region play. All the seniors, we want to go undefeated this season.”
Woods was named the MVP and Most Outstanding Player in the Classic’s American Division Bracket. The North Carolina commit averaged 26 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the tournament. Teammate Chevez Goodwin averaged a double-double in the tournament, and Michael Turner scored 20 points in the championship game against Greenforest.
Hammond returns to action Monday at the C. Dan Joyner Poinsetta Classic in Greenville. The Skyhawks face the Greenville-Palmetto winner in the second round at 8 p.m. Airport and Irmo also are in the tournament. Irmo made it to the final last year before losing to Hillcrest.
