Cardinal Newman wins third straight SCISA wrestling championship

The Cardinal Newman wrestling team continued its dominance Saturday.

The Cardinals won their third straight SCISA state title with a 48-30 victory over Heathwood Hall at Hammond High School. It was Cardinal Newman’s seventh state championship in the last eight years.

Cardinal Newman finished the season with a 19-10 record and was ranked No. 1 in each of the SCMat polls throughout the season.

Cardinal Newman match winners on Saturday were Cooper Schroeder (113), Luke Petit (120), Serjio Montiel (132), Jack Patten (138), Jonathan Dootson (145), Thomas Palevich (172), Paul Bolchoz (182), Delson Coward (195) and Taylor Reed (220).

Heathwood Hall winners were Luke Clarkson (106), Luke Spurrier (126), Henry Kimbrough (152), Woodson Bagnal (160) and Justin Taylor (285).

In the third-place match, Ridge Christian defeated Hammond 42-36. Hammond’s Riley Pharr won his 40th match of the season and 100th victory for his career.

The SCISA individual championships will be held next weekend at Augusta Christian.
