Wando shuts out Brookland-Cayce to win Palmetto Cup
Alex Holloman and Sam Ross scored first-half goals to lift Wando over Brookland-Cayce 2-0 on Saturday in the final of the Nike Palmetto Cup at Brookland-Cayce.
Ross was named the MVP of the 24th annual tournament. It was Wando’s fourth Palmetto Cup title in the past five seasons. The Warriors, ranked No. 2 in USA Today’s Super 25, went 4-0 in the tournament and outscored their opponents 21-1.
Brookland Cayce drops to 10-6-2 and advanced to the championship for the fourth straight year. The Bearcats made it to the championship by defeating Bishop England 1-0 (4-3 in penalty kicks).
Wando defeated Cardinal Newman 5-1 to advance to the championship.
Against B-C, Holloman scored from 22 yards out to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute of the first half. It was the first goal the Bearcats allowed in the tournament and first in 675 minutes, a span of more than eight games.
Ross made it 2-0 in the 24th minute on an assist from Charlie Marino, who had two in the game.
