Taco Bell Classic set for this weekend at Spring Valley

Some of the country’s top track and field athletes will descend on Spring Valley High School for the Taco Bell Track & Field Classic.

More than 2,000 athletes will compete in the 24th annual event. Competition begins at 5:45 p.m. Friday with the junior varsity mile races. Varsity competition begins with the 6 p.m. girls and boys high jump finals. Trials for the 200 and the 3,200 relay finals will be held on Friday.

The meet picks back up Saturday morning with the triple jump and girls 3,200 finals. The final ceremonies are scheduled for 8 p.m.

Cary High School (N.C.) is the defending girls’ champion while Banneker High School in Georgia won the boys championship. Three individual records were set last season and there is a chance that a few more will be set this year.

Some of the top athletes to watch this weekend on the girls side are Sammy Watson (Henrietta, New York) in the 100 and 200, Brandee’ Johnson (Suffolk, Va.) and Anna Cockrell (Charlotte, N.C.). The girls 3,200 should be a strong battle between Lindsay Billings (Deluth, Ga.), Libby Davidson (Lynchburg, Va.) and Spartanburg Christian’s Logan Morris.

On the boys side, ones to watch include Marcus Krah (Durham, N.C.), Infinite Tucker (Huntington, N.Y.) and Elija Goodwin (Covington, Ga.).
