Newberry’s Amy Boozer hired as SCHSL assistant commissioner
Newberry High’s Amy Boozer has been named the assistant commissioner for the South Carolina High School League.
Boozer replaces Dru Nix, who’ll be retiring in the summer. Boozer’s first day is July 5, but she’ll be training before that.
Boozer, a Saluda High grad, has been at Newberry the past 19 years and has coached volleyball, softball and boys golf. Newberry won the 2000 Class 3A Lower State title in volleyball. She also has served as the executive secretary/treasurer of the South Carolina Coaches Association of Women’s Sports.
“It has been a career goal of mine, and I’m excited to have the opportunity,” Boozer said. “I have worked with SCHSL with my position in the coaches association and stayed up to date and what goes on.”
Boozer’s hire marks the second on the SCHSL staff in the past two years. A.C. Flora’s Charlie Wentzky was hired last year to replace Bruce Hulion. The SCHSL also will be going to five classifications next year for 2016-18 school years.
“There is a lot to learn in first few years with staff, and they will make the transition easy for me,” Boozer said. “There is a lot going on. But with change, there is a look for new ideas.”
Boozer’s responsibilities will include the administration of athletics competition, rules clinics and various workshops. She’ll also oversee sports programs to include boys/girls golf, competitive cheer, boys/girls tennis and volleyball.
