Camden’s Billy Ammons to be inducted in S.C. Coaches Hall of Fame

Former Camden football coach Billy Ammons and Batesburg-Leesville football coach Mike Anthony will be part of this year’s inductees of the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame.

Ammons and Anthony will be part of the seven-member class and will be inducted at the SCACA banquet July 24 in Charleston. Other members of this year’s class are Abbeville and Calhoun Falls coach Dennis Botts (deceased), Seneca girls basketball coach Amanda Holder, Berea boys basketball and track coach Jim Mattos and soccer coach Frank Ridlehoover, who coached at four different schools in his career.

Ammons coached at Camden from 1972-1997, compiled a 177-119-1 and led the Bulldogs to the 1990 Class 3A championship. Camden won 10 or more games three consecutive years from 1988-1990.

As a player Ammons was a quarterback of Camden’s 1964 state title team, which allowed just six points the whole season. This will be the second hall of fame honor for Ammons, who was inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Administrators Hall of Fame in 2013.

Anthony coached at Batesburg-Leesville for four seasons and also at Carolina High, Southside, Easley and Union high schools during his 23-year career. He went 174-112 during his career and won three state titles at Union in 2000. 2001 and 2003.

Anthony is currently a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives.
