Three Midlands athletes win on first day of state track championships

Dutch Fork’s Rebekah Smith, River Bluff’s D.J. Ledell and Camden’s Lindsay Pierce took home first place Friday on the first night of the South Carolina High School League Track and Field championships at Spring Valley.

Smith, a senior, won first place in the Class 4A girls triple jump with a leap of 39-4. She also finished first at last week’s state qualifier.

Ledell won the boys 4A triple jump for the second straight year. The River Bluff sophomore had a jump of 48-4.5 for the victory. He also was fourth in the long jump.

Pierce cleared 13-6 to take first in the pole vault after finishing second last year.

Other Midlands athletes had second-place finishes: Blythewood girls 4x800 relay, A.C. Flora’s Arianna Rhue (long jump); Dreher’s Jacory Patterson (long jump) and Lower Richland’s Phillip Flemming (discus).
