Dutch Fork snares 4A championship

By the final race of the Class 4A boys portion of the State Track and Field Meet on Saturday, as many as eight teams had a shot at winning the state championship.

Among the field of rivals at Harry Parone Stadium was Dutch Fork. Because the Silver Foxes had a solid team running in the 4x400-meter relay, whereas other contenders didn’t, they knew they could take it with a strong finish.

“We were prepared for it,” head coach Cory Wright said. “We told the kids all week that we thought it would come down to the 4x400 relay.

That’s just what Dutch Fork’s Austin Connor, Traice Greene, Tre Jenkins, and Waldon Roberson were ready for.

The Silver Foxes stayed up front through all of the exchanges, and anchor leg Austin Connor clung to a slight lead in the final stretch. A North Augusta runner edged him to claim first place in the event with a time of 3 minutes, 23.03 seconds, three hundredths of a second faster than Connor.

Nonetheless, the Silver Foxes’ second-place finish sufficed and they clinched a win.

Dutch Fork’s point total was 43 points, ahead of Wando’s 35.5, Northwestern’s 31.5 and Stratford’s 28 points.

Neither Wando or Stratford had a 4x400 team. Northwestern finished fourth in the race.

“I know we were down a few points, and that’s what I was aiming for, winning,” Connor said. “That was our goal all year to win state, and we knew we had a good chance.”

Connor helped set up the Silver Foxes’ championship with second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 dashes.

“Austin’s been a steady track presence since the eighth grade,” Wright said. “When he ran that leg, it was like he ran it with some intensity, some purpose, like he really really wanted to do it for himself, for his school, for his community, for his parents. I’m so proud of him and for the 4x4 team, just proud of all of them.”

Shot putters Rory Gallman and Mac Coffman also delivered for Dutch Fork. Gallman took first with a throw of 55 feet, while Coffman claimed fourth with a throw of 48 feet, 3.5 inches.

“I’m just so proud of them because we missed so many pieces this year,” Wright said. “We’re missing our top two distance kids, our No.1 400 guy, our No.2 sprinter, and yet our kids found a way to persevere through everything.”

Host team Spring Valley finished with 26.5 points in sixth place.

Wando claimed the 4A girls portion of the meet, with 76.33 points. Midlands teams Ridge View finished fifth with 47 points, Blythewood sixth with 37, and Dutch Fork eighth with 30.

The Blazers’ girls 4x400 team of Faith McKie, Arlicia Bush, Amarrah Cooks and Johnaida Eliscar shut the field down with a wire-to-wire victory in the final event of the 4A girls slate.

“For me being the first leg, I was trying to give my team a good start,” said Eliscar, whose team stayed a considerable distance ahead of the field and finished with a time of 3:50.09. “We were trying to break our record but we came up short.”

The Dreher girls and boys teams, and the Lower Richland Boys placed in the top-10 teams of the 3A competition. Dreher’s boys finished fourth with 42 points, behind champion Hilton Head’s 94. Lower Richland was ninth with 26.

The Dreher girls took ninth with 29 points. Beaufort won the 3A girls with 79 points.

In 2A and 1A, the Bishop England boys and the Waccamaw girls claimed the 2A crowns. Southside Christian took the boys title and Christ Church the girls at 1A.
