Dreher’s McCarthy to join USC women’s soccer coaching staff
Clark McCarthy is leaving high school coaching for the college ranks.
The Dreher boys soccer coach will join South Carolina women soccer’s coaching staff.
“This decision was a very tough decision. There was a lot of discussion with my wife, a lot of prayer, but ultimately our gut feeling was toward taking this opportunity and running with it,” McCarthy said. “(USC coaches) Shelley and Jamie Smith are amazing people, and it will be an awesome opportunity for me to continue to grow professionally. When you do something at one place for an extended period of time, you build special bonds with your co-workers, parents, and players and it is tough to leave those people.
“I am very thankful and grateful for my time at Dreher as a teacher and coach, it has helped make me who I am today and has prepared me for this next step in my professional career.”
At USC, some of McCarthy’s duties will be working with goalkeepers and recruiting. He was a former goalie at Lander from 2005-2008.
McCarthy was 77-56-2 in six seasons at Dreher. The Blue Devils were 20-3-1 this year and co-champions in Region 4-3A with state champion Chapin. Dreher advanced to the third round of the 3A playoffs, and finished the year ranked No. 5 in the state.
Gregory leaving Mid-Carolina
Mid-Carolina baseball coach Daniel Gregory is leaving the school to take an assistant baseball coaching job at Gaffney.
Gregory lives in Spartanburg County, and wanted to move closer to home. He has been at Mid-Carolina for five seasons, the last three as coach.
The Rebels went 58-24 the past three seasons and were district champions and 2A Upper State runner-up in 2015.
Gregory also is the coach of the Newberry-Chapin legion team, which won the American Legion World Series this year. He will remain as the legion coach this summer.
