Midlands players earn soccer, softball, track honors
Lexington’s Brooke Power and Chapin’s Jordan Dawsey won top honors as the South Carolina Coaches Assocation for Women’s Sports handed out their winner and spring players of the year Saturday.
Power was named Class 4A Soccer Player of the Year, while Dawsey won the 3A Player of the year. Both had big roles in helping their teams to state championships.
Power finished with 14 goals and 16 assists in helping the Wildcats to their first 4A championship. Dawsey had 13 goals and three assists during the regular season for the Eagles, who won their first 3A championship.
Power and Dawsey were two of five Midlands players to win player of the year. Dreher’s Jhileiya Dunlap was named 3A basketball player of year, and Keenan’s Breia Jackson won 2A player of year. Dunlap also was the South Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year.
Batesburg-Leesville’s Shandora Cheeseboro was 2A Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
The SCCAWS also named its all-state and rosters for the North-South softball games. Twelve Midlands players were named all-state and eight made the all-star rosters.
Class 4A all-state selections were Spring Valley’s Breanna Martinez, Lugoff-Elgin’s Baleigh Lunsford, Lexington’s Courtney White, White Knoll’s Hannah Goodwin and Dutch Fork’s Meghan Murphy. Martinez and White also will play in the Class A/4A all-star game.
Class 3A all-state selections were Chapin’s Lindsay Harris and Mak Whitman, Gilbert’s Alicia Dorgan and Camden’s Kennidi Stokes. Harris and Dorgan also were picked for the 2A/3A all-star teams.
Class 2A all-state selections were Keenan’s Day-Sha Stewart, Mid-Carolina’s Charlsy Taylor and Alex Fulmer.
Other Class A/4A all-star selections were Lexington’s Shipley Yonkers and Lugoff-Elgin’s Delaney Guerrero. Other 2A/3A all-star picks were Mid-Carolina’s Madyson Murphy and Jayden Peel.
The all-star games will be held June 15-16 at USC Aiken.
