Former Oak Hill Academy assistant Yerrick Stoneman was named the boys basketball coach at Ridge View on Friday.

Stoneman replaces John Combs, who coached the past 11 seasons before leaving to take Ben Lippen job earlier this month.

"I am honored to be hired as the next head coach. I am looking forward to continuing to build a strong and successful program, and I’m eager to meet the players, parents, and fans," Stoneman said.

Stoneman will be formally introduced to the players and parents Tuesday. Ridge View athletic director Brian Rosefield said the school received more than 30 applications for the position.

"Coach Stoneman has a passion for developing young men in to better people and basketball players, helping them get to the next level, and he will bring an exciting brand of basketball to the Ridge View community," Ridge View athletic director Brian Rosefield said.

Stoneman was athletic director and coach at Galax High School in Virginia from 2007-09 then girls basketball, volleyball and track coach there from 2010-16. He left for one year for a year-long deployment in Iraq.

Stoneman’s basketball teams at Galax made one state smifinal appearance and two state quarterfinal appearances.

Before that, Stoneman was an assistant coach for 11 years at powerhouse Oak Hill Academy under Steve Smith and worked with 58 Division I players including future NBA players Carmelo Anthony, DeSagana Diop, Kevin Durant, Brandon Jennings, Rajon Rondo, and Josh Smith.

"During the ten-plus years Yerrick was my top assistant, he helped us win five high school National Championships and produce more than a dozen McDonalds All-Americans," Oak Hill coach Steve Smith said. "Yerrick is a player’s coach and a tremendous role model for the student-athletes he coaches."

Ridge View went 15-9 this year and lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.
