Camden’s bid for an American Legion state title came up short Wednesday at Riley Park.
Florence Post 1 scored three runs in the top of the seventh and held off a late Post 17 comeback for the 9-8 win to secure its third state title in the past five seasons. Florence advances to the Southeast Regional, which will be held on Aug. 3-7 at McCrary Park in Asheboro, N.C.
Camden’s ends the season with a 16-10 record. Post 17 had to win a play-in game just to make it to the state tournament.
Post 17, which needed to win twice for the title, led 6-2 headed to the sixth inning. But Florence scored four runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to lead 9-6. Camden scored twice in the seventh, but didn’t threaten over the final two innings.
Christian Flick drove in four runs, and Devin Beckley added three to lead Camden. Catcher Josh Hernandez earned MVP honors in the losing effort.
Josh Price got the win in relief for Florence, and Brent Herlong got the save. Cody Green had three hits and three RBIs to lead Post 1, and Grayson Cottingham added three hits.
