Baxter’s Blitz: All-State Football Combine brings out the best
The All-State Football Combine is always the last big off-season football event before spring practice. It was a great event this past Saturday at Brookland-Cayce High as 330 of the state’s top football players competed and showcased their talents in front of all-star coaches and Division II college coaches. The Midlands players were outstanding at this year’s event. Here were the combine MVPs.
Camp MVP: Matt Martin, WR, Westside High: This senior tied the combine record for the 40 with a 4.38 and did not drop a pass in the one-on-one competition.
QB MVP: Austin Scott, Spartanburg: 2016 prospect looked good in testing and was clearly the event’s top passer.
RB MVP: Terrance Wilson, Batesburg-Leesville: A unanimous choice for this award among the coaches; was impossible to stop in one-on-ones against the linebackers.
TE MVP: Will Register, Chapin: A 2017 player, he was solid in the testing phase and performed well in the skills and one-on-ones.
WR MVP: Ray Miller, Byrnes: Virtually unstoppable in the one-on-ones and didn’t drop a catchable pass against good coverage.
OL MVP: Zack Epting, center, Christ Church Episcopal: Epting was a standout among the trenchmen, showing strong technique, hip angles and excellent use of hands.
DL MVP: Octavious “Tay” Pringle, Brookland-Cayce: This big sophomore was unstoppable in camp, not being blocked out in one-on-ones.
LB MVP: Keyshawn James, Brookland-Cayce: Moved well in the skills competition and showed good reaction and coverage in the one-on-ones against tight ends and running backs.
DB MVP: Nick Graves, Lexington: Was excellent in testing and was strong in the skills and one-on-ones. He showed good coverage skills in each matchup.
Specialist MVP: Christian Kinsley, K, Lexington: Was 8 of 9 in charting, going 1 for 2 from 47 yards. He was impressive in punting. If the Shrine Bowl staff needs a kicker/punter combo, this is the guy.
