Baxter: Checking out high school football spring drills
Jim Baxter will be checking out Midlands teams as they go through spring football drills over the next few weeks. His first report:
AIRPORT
Key player: Rising junior QB Brett Burnett will lead the offense.
Other players to watch: RBs Zach Feaster and Jonathan Earle return. Josh Tucker and C.J. Wright will be deep threats in the spread. Alec Spooner will be a major contributor as a tight end/H-back.
Key issue: Defensively, there will be players going both ways. Earle and Feaster will be the LBs.
BROOKLAND- CAYCE
Key player: Senior RB Charles Balkom will be one of the best in the Midlands.
Other players to watch: Kozy Brown returns at quarterback, backed up by Thomas Scott and freshman Razor Charpia. Octavious “Tay” Pringle is one of the Midlands’ best defensive linemen.
Key issue: The Bearcats lost talent on the offensive line, but Dr. Jerry Brown has joined the staff to coach that position.
LEXINGTON
Key player: Running back Slade Carroll might be the top power back in the Midlands.
Other players to watch: Donny Baker and Brandon Blake are battling at QB. Nick Graves is one of the state’s best defensive backs. Punter Christian Kinsley is a weapon on special teams.
Key issue: The Cats are slim up front on offense, but rising junior Hunter Blackmon is a developing prospect at left tackle.
