Midlands stars have elite auditions
I HAD AN opportunity to coach at the Nike regional camps for Elite 11 and The Opening in Charlotte this weekend as hundreds of the top athletes from the Southeast competed for invitations to the national finals. Here’s how some players from the Midlands looked at camp.
Stephen Davis, DB, Dutch Fork: Working out as a defensive back, he had one of the top performances of the camp, earning the state’s only invitation to the finals of The Opening later this Summer.
Brandon Tillman, ATH, River Bluff: Competed as a linebacker and was named MVP for the linebacker group.
Brett Burnett, QB, Airport: Had a great camp throwing the football. He looked sharp in drills and skills.
Gunnar Catoe, WR, Lugoff-Elgin: Participated in the combine event and tested well, putting up a personal best in the vertical jump at 36.5 inches.
David Isreal, QB, Blythewood: Looked good in the testing phase of the camp and threw the ball well in the skills session.
Andrew Plante, RB, Westwood: Had a great testing phase in the combine portion of the event, finishing with the fourth highest SPARQ score (testing) overall and the highest of any S.C. competitor.
Mark Rew, QB, Ben Lippen: Held his own against tough competition; threw the ball well in the skills competitions.
Malik Sumter, DL, Dutch Fork: Did well in testing and looked strong in tough competition among the defensive linemen.
D’Marco Zeigler, QB, Keenan: Showed a powerful arm in the skills competition and was a favorite of the wide receivers.
Other South Carolina players who looked strong:
Steven Duncan, QB, Ashley Ridge: Made it to the final competition of Elite 11 regional called “the Pressure Chammber,” for which five quarterbacks are selected.
Austin Scott, QB, Spartanburg: Threw the ball well in skills and one-on-ones and had a 39-foot powerball throw, one of the best in camp for skills players.
Drayton Arnold, QB, Myrtle Beach; Norman Hand, DL, Colleton County; Nicholas Salley, LB, Colleton County; Collin Sneed, QB, Hillcrest.
