What high school football players shined brightest on opening weekend?
There was some outstanding football in Week Zero and here is the first edition of my “Five on the rise.” These are players who increased their stock with performances that commanded recognition from media and recruiters alike (listed alphabetically):
Logan Bailey, quarterback, Chapin – Has to have the top performance of opening weekend. Bailey passed for 259 yards and two scores, and added three more scores rushing in win over Columbia. Will definitely attract some recruiters with his prowess as an athlete.
Charles Balkom, running back, Brookland-Cayce – This guy is a beast of a back. Had 15 carries for 121 yards and a score with three receptions for 24 yards, and a two-point conversion in win over Fairfield Central. Might have to go JUCO route, but this kid has at least FCS potential.
Terrance Coates, linebacker/safety, Blythewood – Coates had an outstanding game in the win over Rock Hill with five total tackles, two for loss and two sacks. This 6-foot, 160-pound standout is just a junior.
Davon Johnson, safety/running back, River Bluff – This 6-foot, 185-pound senior was a standout on defense for the Gators, quick to the ball and strong in run support covering a lot of ground at safety, snagging an interception against Westwood. He’s a hard runner on offense as well, but I believe much stronger as a defensive guy.
Rudy Mitchell, running back, Westwood – This junior backup came in during the first quarter against River Bluff and rushed for 149 yards (much more if not for penalties). Great speed to the edge, elusive in traffic and runs behinds his pads very well.
