Dorman and Keenan certainly didn’t disappointment on the big stage at the 17th annual Chick-fil-A Classic. The top-ranked teams in Class 5A and 3A respectively battled nip and tuck from opening tip to buzzer before the Cavaliers finally prevailed with a 60-50 victory in the Friday evening nightcap.

Part of the crowd included South Carolina coach Frank Martin and Clemson coach Brad Brownell.

Dorman will play for the American Division Bracket championship Saturday evening at 8:30 p.m. against Salesian College Prep from California. Keenan faces Independence (NC) in the third-place contest at 3:40 p.m.

“You know where you are after you play them (Keenan),” Dorman coach Thomas Ryan said. “I was proud of our guys for being tough and defensively we were outstanding tonight.”

Keenan coach Zach Norris was disappointed in his team’s defensive effort. But he knows in the long run, playing in this type of game will only help in the long run.

“I’m going to be honest, we didn’t play defense like they’ve been taught,” Norris said. “Dorman is going to be there, so we got better for sure tonight. In a way, we might have needed something like this. They controlled the tempo and we couldn’t exploit our mismatches.”

Turns out, two huge runs by the Cavaliers turned out to be the difference.

Dorman used an 11-0 run in the first half with Myles Tate, Sam Long and Tyrese Pilgrim hitting 3-pointers to give the Cavaliers a 19-8 lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the half. Keenan responded behind Latrell Taylor’s 11 first half points to only trail 25-22 at the half.

The Cavaliers fell behind by three early in the second half but used a 14-1 run to take a 46-36 lead with just over four minutes remaining.

The Raiders made one final run and got within 46-42 with 2:47 remaining but they couldn’t get any closer.

“Early on, we got up big and PJ (Hall) got his second foul and Keenan was able to get back in it,” Ryan said. “I did think the run there in the (second half) was big. We hit a couple of shots and Myles Tate was fantastic.”

The trio of Tate, PJ Hall and Ta’lon Cooper led the way for Dorman. Tate, one of the top-ranked juniors in the state with an offer from South Carolina, finished with 19 points and four steals. Hall and Cooper each added 14 points.

Latrell Taylor led Keenan with 23 points. Raekwon Horton added 13 points, but the Raiders only shot 28.6 percent from the field.

In the National Division Bracket, St. Frances Academy (MD) and Bella Vista (CA) advanced to the championship at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday.

St. Frances advanced with a 53-44 win over St Benedict Prep (NJ) on the strength of three players scoring in double figures. Jordan Toles scored 16 points with Rajeir Jones adding 14 points and Adrian Baldwin chipping in with 12. Baldwin, who added nine assists, was offered by both South Carolina and Clemson this weekend.

Bella Vista rallied for a 71-64 double overtime win over nationally ranked Sunrise Christian in the other semifinal. Addison Patterson scored 24 points with Terry Armstrong adding 23 points. Sunrise Christian was the only nationally ranked team in the field, 13th by USA Today.

Gray Collegiate and Ridge View will tip the action off at 12:30 p.m. with eight games on the slate for the final day of the tournament.
