Fourth-quarter blitz helps Scott’s Branch girls past High Point for first state title

Scott’s Branch finally made history.

The Eagles rallied from an early double-digit deficit to capture the school’s first state championship in girls basketball with a 63-49 victory over High Point Academy in the Class A state championship Friday afternoon at the Colonial Life Arena.

Scott’s Branch (23-3) had been in the championship three times previously but finished runner-up in 1996, 1996 and 2001.

Mary Wimberly scored 20 points, 15 in the second half, to lead Scott’s Branch. Tonia Lawson added 14 points and Cambria Parker chipped in with 11. Lawson also had 11 of Scott’s Branch 24 steals.

High Point (20-4) led by as many as 11 points in the first half. The Eagles were able to close within 23-20 at the half though. The Grizzles continued to lead the entire third quarter, but Scott’s Branch started a 12-2 run that gave them a 43-38 lead with 6:03 remaining.

Scott’s Branch outscored High Point 32-13 to end the game.
