GEICO Nationals high school hoops tournament in SC postponed over coronavirus concerns
A day after announcing the GEICO Nationals would be moving from New York to Dorman High School in South Carolina, the event has been postponed indefinitely because of the coronavirus.
“As the situation with Coronavirus continues to evolve, GEICO Nationals will be postponed indefinitely to ensure the health and safety of student-athletes, coaches and spectators.,” GEICO Nationals Director Rashid Ghazi said in a statement.
Ghazi announced Wednesday that the event will be moved from Christ The King High School in New York City to Dorman High School, located in the Upstate of South Carolina, due to fears of coronavirus.
By moving locations, teams can bus to the event to be held April 2-4 and televised on ESPN networks. Now, the event will be on held but the hope it gets rescheduled.
The complete GEICO Nationals field will be announced at a later date but Dorman already has received an invitation. The Cavs had to win an appeal to play in the event.
Last month, the South Carolina High School League Executive committee voted 17-0 in favor of Dorman playing in the event.
Dorman captured its fourth straight Class 5A championship last week by defeating Dutch Fork 65-46. The Cavs are only the second team in state history in the modern era to win four straight titles, matching Class A Calhoun County (2006-09). Columbia won five from 1916-20 and Charleston won six straight from 1922-27.
The Cavs are ranked No. 2 by ESPN and No. 3 by MaxPreps and featured Division I signees PJ Hall (Clemson) and Myles Tate (Butler).
“Excited for our program, school and community to have the opportunity to host this year’s Geico Nationals!” a message on Dorman Basketball’s Twitter page read.
