With the region title up for grabs, Irmo’s Juice Kiett knew his team needed a little extra energy and he provided that.

The Irmo senior scored a game-high 28 points and the Yellow Jackets used a strong defensive performance in the second half to defeat AC Flora, 63-52, on Friday in a matchup between two top ranked teams in Class 4A.

“First time around, we lost,” Kiett said. “This was for the No. 1 spot. We couldn’t come out and play lackadaisical. We had to come out and take care of business.”

The victory put the Yellow Jackets in the drivers’ seat in Region 4-4A. Irmo must win two of its three games next week or have Flora lose one of its final two games to win the region title.

Irmo (6-1 Region 4-4A) and AC Flora (6-2) split the two meetings this season with Flora winning, 60-55, on Jan. 14. The Yellow Jackets hold the tiebreaker between the two teams if they finish tied.

“It is up to us now. If we can stay with it and stay focused and do well these last three games then we are in good shape,” Irmo coach Tim Whipple said.

Guard Dylan Williams added 12 points and TeAndre Summons had 10 for Irmo.

Irmo used an 8-1 run in the third quarter to take a 33-26 lead. The Falcons got within 40-37 early in the fourth but the Yellow Jackets answered with a 7-2 run capped off by a Kiett dunk.

Irmo shot 57 percent from the game and forced 20 AC Flora turnovers. The Yellow Jackets also did a better job on Flora bigman Collin Murray-Boyles, who scored 30 points in the first matchup. Murray-Boyles was held to just 15 points in the game.

In other action Friday:

Westwood girls clinched their fifth straight region title and Dutch Fork boys clinched its third straight region title.

Gray Collegiate boys and girls clinched Region 3-2A championships.

Keenan boys and girls finished perfect region records with wins over Mid-Carolina.

Camden sophomore Joyce Edwards was honored for becoming the school’s all-time leading scorer. Edwards entered Friday with 1,912 points and had 27 in the win over Marlboro County. South Carolina coach Dawn Staley was in attendance to see Edwards, the top-ranked recruit by ESPNw for the Class of 2024.

South Carolina signee Ashlyn Watkins had a dunk during the fourth quarter of Friday’s victory over Ben Lippen.
