Who’s in, who’s out? The playoff picture for Midlands high school basketball teams
The final week of the regular season is here for South Carolina high school basketball public schools.
There are plenty of races and spots yet to be determined, but here is a look at how things are shaping up for Midlands teams (region records in parentheses).
Boys
Class 5A
Region 3: Fort Mill (7-2) leads the region. Rock Hill (6-3) and Blythewood (6-3) are tied for second. Clover (4-5) is in fourth place. Spring Valley (2-7) and Nation Ford (2-7) are tied for fifth and final spot.
Region 4: Lexington (7-0) clinched the region title. River Bluff (5-2) is second with Dutch Fork (3-4) and Chapin are tied for third. DF holds tiebreaker if two teams finish tied.
Class 4A
Region 4: North Augusta (7-0) has won the region and Midland Valley (6-2) is second. Aiken (3-5) is third and South Aiken (2-6) is fourth.
Region 5: Irmo and AC Flora are tied for first at 6-3. Ridge View (5-4) is third and plays Flora on Friday. Richland Northeast (4-5) is fourth. Westwood (3-6) and Lugoff-Elgin (3-6) are tied for fifth. The top four are guaranteed a playoff spot with the other two alive for at-large berths.
Class 3A
Region 5: Orangeburg-Wilkinson (9-0) won the region and Lower Richland (7-2) is second. Dreher (5-4) and Brookland-Cayce (5-4) are battling for the final two spots. Dreher holds the tiebreaker if two teams finish tied.
Region 6: Crestwood (9-1) clinched the region. Lake City (7-3) is second. Lakewood (4-6) is third and Camden (4-6) is fourth.
Class 2A
Region 2: Saluda (6-1) clinches the region with a win Thursday. Newberry (5-2) and Abbeville (5-2) are a game back and play each other Thursday. If Saluda loses and Abbeville beats Newberry, Saluda is still the region champs. If Saluda loses and Newberry beats Abbeville, Saluda and Newberry will have a game Friday at a neutral site to determine the 1 and 2 seed. Mid-Carolina (2-5) is fourth.
Region 3: Strom Thurmond (7-0) won the region. Silver Bluff (5-2) is second. Fox Creek (4-3) has clinched third. Batesburg-Leesville (2-6) is fourth.
Region 4: Gray Collegiate (7-1) clinched the region. Keenan (6-1) will finish second. The last two spots are between Eau Claire (2-5), Columbia (2-5) and Fairfield Central (1-6).
Region 5: Andrew Jackson (11-0) wins the region. Central (8-3) is second. The other two spots are between Cheraw (5-6), Chesterfield (5-7), North Central (4-7) and York Prep (4-7).
Class A
Region 3: Great Falls (9-0) is first and CA Johnson (8-1) is in second. The two teams play Friday for the region title. McBee (5-4) and Lewisville (4-5) are battling for third and fourth place.
Girls
Class 5A
Region 3: Spring Valley (9-1) won the region and its regular season complete after Blythewood forfeited the regular-season finale. Rock Hill (7-2) is second. Clover (4-5) is in third. Blythewood (4-6) is fourth and Nation Ford (3-6) is fifth.
Region 4: Lexington (6-1) and Dutch Fork (6-1) are tied for first and play Thursday. River Bluff (4-3) clinched third. Chapin (1-6) is fourth and White Knoll (1-7) fifth. Chapin holds tiebreaker over WK if two teams finish tied.
Class 4A
Region 4: North Augusta (7-0) is the region champ. Aiken (5-3) is second and Airport (3-4) third. The final playoff spot will be between Midland Valley (2-6) and South Aiken (2-6). MV holds the tiebreaker.
Region 5: Westwood (9-0) clinched the region. Ridge View (7-2) leads AC Flora (6-3) for second and will play for second-place on Friday. Irmo (3-6) is in fourth.
Class 3A
Region 5: Lower Richland (9-0) won the region. Orangeburg-Wilkinson (7-2) is second. Swansea (5-4) is third and Dreher (4-5) is fourth.
Region 6: Camden (10-0) clinched the region. Crestwood (8-2) is second and Marlboro County (5-4) third. Lakewood (3-6) is fourth.
Class 2A
Region 2: Saluda (6-1) is in first and Mid-Carolina (5-2). The two teams play Thursday. Ninety-Six (5-3) is third and has shot at second place. Abbeville (1-6) and Newberry (1-6) will battle for the final spot and play Thursday.
Region 3: Silver Bluff (7-0) is region champ and Strom Thurmond (5-2) is second. Pelion (3-3) leads Batesburg-Leesville by a game.
Region 4: Keenan (7-0) has clinched the region and Gray Collegiate (6-2) is second. The final two spots are between Fairfield Central (2-5), Eau Claire (2-5) and Columbia (1-6).
