Lexington High School’s Cam Scott earned one of the state’s top honors on Wednesday.

The junior guard was named the Gatorade South Carolina Boys Basketball Player of the Year, an award that encompasses athletics, academics and character. It’s the second-straight year a Midlands player has won the honor. Ridge View’s GG Jackson won it in 2022.

Scott is the 13th different boys area player to win the award. Lower Richland’s Stanley Roberts won it twice from 1987-88. Scott’s win gives the Midlands a sweep in the top basketball honors this year. Camden’s Joyce Edwards was named the girls Gatorade Player of Year last week.

“Just really thankful to be in this position to be able to receive an award like this. My teammates and coaches at every level have helped put me in position to even be considered for this award,” Scott said on Wednesday. “With winning Gatorade Player of the Year, I also get the chance to help local sports groups with the Play it Forward program, which is something that means a lot to me to be able to help the Lexington community that’s supported me so much these past four years.

“It’s a great individual honor but there are still things that I want to accomplish in my high school career and I’m looking forward to working toward those goals this summer and next high school season.”

The 6-foot-6, 180-pound Scott averaged 19.2 points, 6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.4 steals per game this past season in helping the Wildcats to the Class 5A Upper State championship game. It was Lexington’s first semifinal appearance since 2019.

Scott set the school’s all-time scoring record earlier this year, breaking the mark of Shaq Roland.

Off the court, Scott has volunteered locally with the Bair Foundation, a nonprofit foster care agency, and served at Special Olympics Day.

Scott is the top-ranked prospect in South Carolina for the Class of 2024 and ranked No. 32 nationally by 247Sports Composite. He has many Division I offers and has narrowed down his choices to Auburn, Florida State, Kansas, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.
