Hammond’s Goodwin signs with College of Charleston

There was no last-minute change for Chevez Goodwin. The Hammond basketball standout committed to College of Charleston over the summer and signed with the Cougars Wednesday, the first day of fall signing period.

“It is a humbling experience,” Goodwin said. “I get to play college basketball and live out my dream.”

Goodwin said the moment was special because he was joined by his father Charles, a former Scott’s Branch football coach. The two have very been close after Goodwin’s mother died when he was in the third grade.

“Time we spent in the gym, late nights doing homework and lot of different stuff was worth it,” Goodwin said. “It is a reward for all the time we put into it.”

Goodwin, 6-foot-9, began his career at A.C. Flora and transferred to Hammond before his sophomore season. He grew six inches since his freshman year and interest has blossomed over the last year.

College of Charleston was one of the first schools to show interest and that always stuck with Goodwin.

As a junior, Goodwin averaged 12.6 points, 9.4 rebounds and shot 55 percent from the field, helping the Skyhawks to the SCISA Class 3A championship. He’ll likely play small forward for the Cougars.

“We were looking for size in the state, saw Chevez at an AAU tournament and fell in love with him,” College of Charleston coach Earl Grant said in a release. “He was recruited at a high level and we are very fortunate to sign him.”
