Goodwin, Woods propel Skyhawks in fourth quarter

Hammond and A.C. Flora spent three quarters battling in the final Bojangles’ Bash game.

The fourth quarter was slightly less dramatic, once the Skyhawks found ways to get the ball into center Chevez Goodwin, and once Seventh Woods freed himself up for key shots in the paint. The two seniors led the Skyhawks to a 74-68 victory to hand the Falcons their first defeat of the season before a packed house at Ridge View.

“We played hard, man. We weren’t afraid at all of them. One of the best teams in the state, and we played them hard.” Hammond coach Mark McClam said. “We made plays, we made stops defensively, we made rebounds, we weren’t turning the ball over for a change.”

In addition to outrebounding the Falcons 37-23, Hammond (6-0) got 33 points from Goodwin, who also had 14 rebounds. Woods had 24, and Jonathan Yuchmow put up 10 points.

A.C. Flora (6-1), making its first appearance in the Bash, got 25 points from Kendale Hampton and 17 points each from Christian Brown and Brandon Davis.

The Falcons were 24-for-56 from the floor, a few shots below Hammond’s 50 percent effort on 24-for-48 shooting.

“Chevez is just a monster on the glass. He just took over,” McClam said. “And Seventh is Seventh. He does his thing. He’s poised. Defensively, he’s great, and he makes good decisions.”

The Skyhawks started the fourth quarter with a 51-48 lead, then went on an 11-1 run over the first three minutes to give themselves breathing room.

Down 62-49 by that point, A.C. Flora spent the next five minutes working its way back into the game. The Falcons cut Hammond’s lead to 68-65 with a minute left, but foul trouble kept putting Woods at the free-throw line, where he went 6-for-6.

“I just couldn’t be happier,” McClam said. “That’s probably the No.1 team in 3A, and we took it to them.”

Hammond stayed a shot or two ahead of Flora in the first half, but couldn’t build up a large cushion on the Falcons.

With a Goodwin putback late in the first, Hammond took its largest lead in the half, a 15-9 advantage. Seconds later, James Reese responded with a 3-pointer to get the Falcons back to within three points at the first quarter buzzer.

Flora took a very brief lead early in the second quarter when Hampton’s 3 gave the Flacons a 16-15 lead. Another Goodwin basket a few seconds later, put Hammond ahead again.

Such was the way of things until the half, when Hammond held a 31-28 lead. Both teams scored 20 points in the third quarter to set up Hammond’s final run.
