SCISA playoff roundup: Hammond hammers Wilson Hall

The Hammond boys basketball team didn’t show much rust after an 11-day layoff. Chevez Goodwin scored 17 points and Jonathon Yuchmow added 16 as the Skyhawks defeated Wilson Hall 64-49 Wednesday in the SCISA Class 3A quarterfinals at the Sumter Civic Center.

The defending champion Skyhawks (23-2), ranked in MaxPreps and USA Today national polls, will play Northwood on Friday at 5 p.m.

“I was concerned like anyone else with an 11-day layoff … but I thought we looked pretty sharp,” Hammond coach Mark McClam said. “We had some great practices leading up to this game. This is a senior-laiden team and we are really focused.”

Goodwin had 12 of his 17 points in the second half as the Skyhawks took control of the game in the third quarter. He also finished with 10 rebounds.

Up by eight points, Hammond went on a 13-0 run and led with 52-31 late in the third quarter.

“I remember the first time we played here after a layoff and we got beat. And I cried so bad,” Goodwin said of the loss to Augusta Christian in 2014. “But I’m glad we got off to a good start. Wilson Hall is pretty dangerous but it is a good first start.”

North Carolina signee Seventh Woods returned to Hammond’s lineup after missing the season finale against Ben Lippen on Feb. 12 with a bone bruise. Woods finished with five points, five rebounds and six assists despite not playing the final 10 minutes.

Drew Talley led Wilson Hall (15-11) with 17 points.

The Highlanders (18-7) advance to the semifinals for the fourth time in seven seasons and will play Porter-Gaud on Friday at 8 p.m.

Trailing 44-43, Vaughn gave the Highlanders the lead on an up-and-under layup with 44 seconds left. On LMA’s next possession, Vaughn took a charge and then hit two free throws a few moments later to put Heathwood up 47-44 with 32 seconds left.

“Nygel is a senior and been there before,” Heathwood coach Jeff Whalen said. “He stepped up and held is together. And he is one guy on a team that will take a charge.”
