Cardinal Newman names new boys, girls basketball coaches
Cardinal Newman will have two new basketball coaches next season.
Phillip Deter has been named the boys’ basketball coach, whole Molly Rainwater has been named the girls’ basketball coach.
Deter replaces coach Brandon Conrad, who went 32-25 the past two seasons. CN athletic director Will Eudy said change was made to have a coach that worked on campus.
Deter, 27, teaches at the school and has been an assistant for the varsity squad since 2012. He was a manager at South Carolina under Darrin Horn in college.
The Cardinals went 16-13 last season and made it to the second round of the SCISA 3A playoffs. CN returns most of last year’s squad including leading scorer Christiaan Jones, Brandon Martin and Chico Carter.
"I am looking forward to competing with this group I got to know the last few years," Deter said. "It is a talented group coming back. They can really play and look to get up and down. Hopefully, the relationship I built will help us this season."
Rainwater takes over for Jomont Ware, who will be an assistant for the boys’ teams. She played at Cardinal Newman and was all-state in basketball and played on the girls state championship soccer teams in 2011-12.
Rainwater played basketball at North Georgia the past four years. She averaged 6.8 points per game in her career and was member of Peach Belt Conference academic honor roll the past two seasons.
Cardinal Newman also named Cynthia Dimapan as its new volleyball coach. She has been the club director and head coach for the South Carolina Midlands teams.
Dimapan also has coached in Texas and Guam.
