Blythewood gets by Westwood
Shortly after the first quarter, Jordyn Adams had nowhere to go – until the fourth quarter.
Down 20-14, Blythewood took over deep in its own territory after a Terrance Coates interception at the Westwood 5-yard line.
Adams led the Bengals on a 7-play, 95-yard scoring drive, including passes of 21 and 46 yards to Kenny Benton. The go-ahead score came on Adams’ 35-yard TD pass to Coates.
After Westwood turned the ball over on downs at their own 2-yard line, Blythewood running back Jeffrey Watkins closed out a 28-20 victory with a 2-yard TD run with 2:39 left.
Adams scored on a 12-yard TD run in the first quarter and found Kameron Riley for a 5-yard touchdown pass early in the second, but the Westwood defense shut down Blythewood (3-1) in the second and third quarters.
The Redhawks (2-2) got on the board with a 22-yard Elijah Heatley-to-Cortez Braham TD pass late in the second. Dermonti Romey cut Blythewood’s lead to 14-13 with an 83-yard TD return at the end of the first half.
Westwood then took a 20-14 lead on a 15-yard Jaylon Riley TD run with 3:07 left in the third.
TURNING POINT
Down 20-14, Westwood was threatening another touchdown drive until Blythewood defender Sekwan Jenkins intercepted a pass at the Redhawks’ 5-yard line. From that point, the Bengals knocked out a 7-play, 95-yard drive, capped with a 35-yard Terrance Coates TD reception, to retake the lead.
KEY PERFORMERS
Dermonti Romey: The Bengals were driving into scoring position at the close of the half, but the Westwood defender shut down the momentum with an 83-yard interception return with no time on the clock. The point-after attempt failed and Blythewood clung to a 14-13 lead.
Jordyn Adams: The Blythewood quarterback had a dry spell through the second and third quarters, but threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 56 yards and a score on 17 carries.
KEY NUMBERS
15: Number of tackles Blythewood linebacker Micah Byrd was in on. He also had a sack.
12: Number of incompletions Adams had in the second and third quarters. He completed two passes in that timeframe.
THEY SAID IT
“They played just as well as we did. They’re good. They’re just going to keep getting better all season. They’re physical. I’m shocked at how resilient our defense was, making it through that game.” – Blythewood head coach Dan Morgan
“We just figured that if we could get the ball out of the red zone. Even if they would have scored it would be a one-possession game. Either way we’re going to have to drive the length of the field. We were just hoping to make something happen. If it worked I would’ve been a genius and if it didn’t, I’m an idiot.” – Westwood head coach Dustin Curtis, on choosing to go for it on fourth down inside the 2-yard line instead of taking the safety late in the game.
