Clemson coach Dabo Swinney still has room for one more piece in his 2015 class.

Wide receiver/defensive back Denzel Johnson of A.C. Flora High expects to sign with the Tigers on May 19 if he can qualify academically.

That’s the day his final grades are to be posted, and if his GPA and test scores meet NCAA guidelines, Johnson’s will be on his way to Clemson.

“Oh yeah,” Johnson said when asked if he were confident about making the grades. He said he was 95 percent sure.

Johnson still has exams to take next week and they will factor into the final grades. Johnson said he’s studying hard and feels confident about doing well.

Georgia Southern visited him at Flora on Tuesday, and the wide receivers coach told him they still have a scholarship from him. He’s also hearing from S.C. State and Massachusetts.

USC last contacted Johnson about three weeks ago and said he still had a grayshirt offer if he qualified, but Johnson said he’s not interested in going that route.

Johnson said if he comes up short of qualifying he will go the junior college route.

Johnson had 69 catches for 910 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. He also played safety and had 60 tackles with 2 interceptions and 8 passes broken up.

Johnson said Clemson hasn’t told him which position he would play.
