Former Gamecock football standout lands coaching spot at Midlands high school
Former South Carolina standout Cory Boyd will be coaching high school football in the Midlands this season.
Boyd was hired as running backs and tight ends coach at Gray Collegiate. The War Eagles are coached by Adam Holmes, who also played for the Gamecocks.
“I was looking for the right coaching opportunity,” Boyd said. “I knew who coach Holmes was and to have someone who played at USC and that level made the situation a little more homey. And when we stat down, I came to conclusion that this would be right place for me to continue my coaching career.”
Boyd spent last year at Blythewood and coached previously at Kelly Middle School. He also founded CB3 Athletics, which helps players with football skills, pro mentorship and academic achievement.
The New Jersey native led the Gamecocks in rushing in his final two years in 2006-07. He became only the second USC player to finish with 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in his career.
Boyd was a seventh-round draft pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and spent two years in the NFL with the Bucs and Denver Broncos before finishing his career in the Canandian Football League. He played from 2010-12 in the CFL with Toronto Argonauts and had a pair of 1,000-yard seasons.
