His dad told him it’s his time. Now Jackson Muschamp takes over at QB

Jackson Muschamp is ready for his opportunity.

After playing behind record-setting quarterback Corbett Glick, it’s Muschamp’s turn to lead the Hammond offense. Muschamp, the son of South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp, hit the field Thursday for practice with the rest of his Skyhawk teammates.

It was the first day of practices for South Carolina Independent School Association teams. S.C. High School League teams start their practices Friday.

Hammond is coming off winning the SCISA 3A championship, its ninth in the past 14 seasons.

“I’ve got big shoes to fill, not only as a football player but as a leader and person in this community,” Muschamp said. “I try not to think about it too much. I just want to be myself and play my own game.”

Muschamp, who started on defense last year, said he learned a lot from Glick, who threw for 3,308 yards and 38 touchdowns in 2017, especially how to conduct himself and interact with his teammates.

“I want to be close to everybody on the team,” Muschamp said. “I think that is one of the most important attributes to being a quarterback. That’s how you get guys to follow you.”

Muschamp has done a lot to get ready for his opportunity, including working out at several college prospect camps.

Hammond coach Erik Kimrey said the junior was a leader in the weight room and possesses all the intangibles you would expect from a son of a college head coach.

“Being a coach’s son helps him understand what is needed to be successful,” Kimrey said. “Jackson worked very hard with his fundamentals and is spinning it really well right now. His understanding of the game is at a high level. We expect big things from him and are excited to watch him play.

“He is also new at this and hasn’t done it under the lights yet, so there will be a learning curve. We think he is more than capable.”

As far as advice from his father, Jackson said his dad lets him be his own guy, but he knows he can talk to him whenever the need arises. There were some words of advice as the season draws near.

“He told me it is my time, the torch has been passed down and it is my time out there to play,” Jackson Muschamp said.

Muschamp will have plenty of weapons around him at Hammond. Jordan Burch and Alex Huntley are two of the top prospects in the state for the class of 2020. Burch will see a lot more time at receiver this season, giving Muschamp another target to go with the likes of Saul Diaz, Cleo Canty, Josh Lipsitz and Andre Wilson.

Hammond will play an 11-game schedule, one more than most teams, beginning with Charlotte Country Day on Aug. 17.
