Blythewood rallied from a two-touchdown deficit in the first quarter to earn its first win in the Jason Seidel era Friday night, a 38-21 victory against rival Ridge View.

As the home team in District 2 Stadium, the Blazers got JaVon Anderson touchdown passes to Senika McKie and Jordan Smith in the first quarter.

Besides Isaiah Porter’s 96-yard kickoff return that put Ridge View up 21-8, in the second quarter, the rest of the game belonged to the Bengals.

“In the past they’ve been used to being down and shutting the door.” Seidel said. “We kept saying just hang in there. We’ve put them through so much over the summer, we just told them, keep doing what you’re doing.”

After Patten put the Bengals on the scoreboard with a 17-yard TD run in the second quarter, Jaylon Boyd scored on a 13-yard TD run.

Patrick Godbolt and a host of Blythewood defenders blocked a Nick Lawyer punt. Godbolt fell on the loose ball in the end zone to give the Bengals a 24-21 halftime lead.

The Bengals closed out the third quarter with a 13-play, 90-yard drive that Boyd capped with a 15-yard score.

Blythewood wore down the Blazers more in the fourth quarter, and closed out the game with Brandon Edwards’ 10-yard TD run.

THREE THINGS WE LEARNED

1. Quinton Patten is healthy. After missing most of last season with an injury, the Blythewood quarterback rushed 10 times for 95 yards and a score in the first half.

2. Jason Seidel has Blythewood looking competitive. The first-year coach brought an offense from Hickory Ridge (NC) that averaged more than 33 points per game to the Bengals in the offseason.

3. Patrick Godbolt is a beast. The Bengals defensive linebacker was a regular visitor to the Ridge View backfield. He had two sacks, put pressure a punt that was blocked and fell on the ball in the end zone for the score.
