Dutch Fork dominates Spring Valley behind 563 yards of offense
Dutch Fork had to wait a week to play, but it was an impressive beginning for the two-time Class 5A defending state champions. The top-ranked Silver Foxes rolled up 563 yards of offense Friday night in a 63-0 dismantling of Spring Valley.
Ty Olenchuk threw for three scores and ran for another, Ron Hoff and Jon Hall ran for two and Gage Zirke added two touchdown receptions as the Silver Foxes won for the 11th consecutive time against the Vikings.
Hall ran for more than 100 yards, and Zirke and Hyatt were both over 100 yards receiving.
“It was a pretty impressive beginning,” Dutch Fork coach Tom Knotts said. “We have a lot of weapons in Hoff, Gage Zirke, Ty and Jalin Hyatt. They’re special players. We got a lot of points, and everybody played. I’m just real pleased after a lot of practice and no games.”
A week ago, Dutch Fork had a highly anticipated showdown with Mallard Creek canceled because of weather.
“Mallard Creek was probably the most hyped and ready we’ve ever been for a game, and I feel like we just carried that over to this week, and it showed,” Olenchuk said.
Dutch Fork turned it over on the second play of the game but then scored on nine straight possessions. Hyatt started things with a spectacular 21-yard one-handed catch in the back of the end zone.
The Silver Foxes were stopped on the next possession, but the punt hit a Spring Valley player in the back and Ryan Harris recovered at the Vikings 22-yard line. Four plays later, Olenchuk ran it in from four yards out.
Dutch Fork had the ball for 3:44 of the second quarter, but both of the drives resulted in touchdowns. Hoff capped a 7-play, 54-yard drive with a 10-yard run.
The final first-half score came when the Silver Foxes got a fourth down stop at their own 17-yard line with 1:47 remaining in the half. They then executed a textbook two-minute drill and scored on a 10-yard pass from Olenchuk to Zirke 13 seconds before the half to make it 28-0.
THREE THINGS WE LEARNED
1. Dutch Fork lived up to the hype. Olenchuk, Hoff and Hyatt were know commodities, but Zirke and Hall were just as impressive. Zirke had 233 all-purpose yards.
2. Spring Valley fell behind early and, with its unsettled situation at quarterback, had trouble finding ways to get first downs. The Vikings played two guys under center and finished with 130 yards of offense and just 12 yards passing.
3. The Dutch Fork defense doesn’t get the headlines but stymied the Vikings offense at every turn. They’re big up front with speed in the secondary.
