Westwood, Camden, Chapin score rivalry game victories

Westwood needed a big defensive play, and Joseph Washington gave them one.

Washington picked off King Ford and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to help seal the Redhawks’ 18-7 win over Blythewood on Friday night.

It was Westwood’s second straight win in the rivalry. The Redhawks lead the series, 4-3.

The game was scoreless at halftime but Westwood scored on its opening possession of the third quarter on quarterback Ahmon Green’s 1-yard run. The drive was set up by Cortes Braham’s 56-yard kickoff return.

The Redhawks made it 12-0 when Green hit Braham on a 16-yard score to make it 12-0 with 5:59 left in third.

Blythewood got on the board when Ford found Joshua Burrell on a 34-yard pass to cut the lead to 12-7 with 8:38 left in the fourth. Ford came in for an injured Quinton Patten in the first quarter. Patten injured his knee and didn’t return.

“I don’t know if we win the game if Patten doesn’t get hurt,” Curtis said. “I’m proud of these guys and I love them but we didn’t play disciplined football tonight.”

Ford was 12-of-24 for 102 yards and two interceptions. Jaylon Boyd rushed for 74 yards.

After the touchdown, Blythewood stopped Westwood and got the ball back, but Washington came up with the big interception.

Green was 10-of-20 for 187 yards. Christian Horn led Westwood with three catches for 71 yards.

Camden 47, Lugoff-Elgin 14

Shymeik Corbett ran for 112 yards and two total TDs as the Bulldogs defeated the Demons.

Willis Lane added 71 yards and a score and quarterback Bryce Jeffcoat threw two scores.

Hammond 49, Trinity-Byrnes 24

Andre Wilson caught nine passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns and also had a 95-yard kickoff return for a TD for the Skyhawks.

Jackson Muschamp was 12-of-20 for 201 yards and three scores. Hal Croswell rushed for 96 yards and a score.

White Knoll 28, Colleton County 21

Aveon Smith rushed for 144 yards and threw for 195 with four total TDs for White Knoll.

Smith hit Aidan Myers on a 32-yard score to put the Timberwolves up 28-14 in the third quarter.

Lexington 16, Dreher 7

Quarterback Cal Herndon accounted for both Lexington scores and Akeem Nicholas had a big night on the ground for the Wildcats.

Nicholas rushed for 193 yards and Wildcat defense held Dreher to 166 yards.

Da Da Washington had the Blue Devils’ lone score.

Porter-Gaud 42, Cardinal Newman 21

Porter-Gaud scored two defensive touchdowns and a special teams score in the win over Cardinal Newman.

AJ Depalma threw for two TDs and ran for another one for Cardinal Newman.

River Bluff 31, Richland Northeast 0

The Gators are off to their first 2-0 start in school history with a win over the Cavs.

Braden Walker and Antonio Gantt each ran for touchdowns.

Ridge View 33, Providence Day (NC) 7

Walyn Napper ran for a TD and caught a score in Ridge View’s victory.

Quarterback Javon Anderson threw the TD pass to Napper and also ran a score.

Chapin 17, Mid-Carolina 13

Roger Pedroni threw for 194 yards and a touchdown as Chapin won the Battle for the Bell against rival Mid-Carolina.

Eau Claire 14, Hunter-Kinard-Tyler 0

Eau Claire is off to a 2-0 start for first time since 2006 with a road win.

Shytrell O’neal rushed for 157 yards and Jordan Howell ran for a TD. Javis Lucas picked off two passes.

Gilbert 54, Batesburg-Leesville 19

Matt Reed, Josh Strickland and Jy Tolen each had big nights for the Indians.

Reed caught 11 catches for 238 yards and three touchdowns. Strickland and Tolen each ran threw two TD passes and ran for scores in the blowout win.

Strickland was 11-of-18 for 223 yards in the air and Tolen was 7-of-8 for 126.

Heathwood Hall 13, Wilson Hall 12

Heathwood Hall stopped a fake extra point to pick up first win for new coach Danny Lewis.

Alex Lewis scored on a 10-yard run overtime and Grayson Tanner’s extra point made it 13-6.

Wilson Hall scored on fourth-and-goal but didn’t convert the two-point conversion.

Tanner had a pair of field goals in the first half.

Ben Lippen 34, Pinewood Prep 6

Ryan Fleming and Rico Dorsey each had two touchdowns to give first-year coach James Reynolds his first victory.

Fleming scored on a 65-yard run and 14-yard run. Dorsey caught an 85-yard pass from Rob Gordon and had a 70-yard punt return for a score. Fleming finished with 8 carries for 116 yards and two scores. Dorsey had 208 all-purpose yards and two TDs.

Gordon was 8-of-17 for 166 yards and a TD.

Gray Collegiate 28, Swansea 26

Gray Collegiate made a late defensive stop to pick up its first win of the season.

Freshman Kazarius Adams rushed for 213 yards and three TDs for the War Eagles. Hunter Helms threw for 180 yards and a TD.

C.A. Johnson 32, Lewisville 22

C.A. Johnson equaled its win total from last season with a victory over the Lions.

Quarterback Nathaniel Henderson was 6-of-9 passing for 300 yards and five touchdowns. Desmond Martin had four catches for 230 yards and three TDs and also picked off a pass on defense.
