Spring Valley, Dreher, Richland Northeast pick up first wins
What a difference a week makes for Spring Valley.
After being shut out in their opener against Dutch Fork, the Vikings bounced back with a 49-35 win over Brookland-Cayce on Friday at Harry Parone Stadium.
Isaiah Miller rushed for three first-half touchdowns and Anthony Wilson and Adrian Ross each added scores for the Vikings, who ran for 337 yards.
Alex Herrera threw two touchdown passes to Malik Wesley, who finished with five catches for 100 yards.
Brookland-Cayce trailed 35-14 at halftime but got to within two touchdowns twice in the second half, the second time when Reed Charpia threw a TD pass to Malachi Brown to cut the lead to 49-35 with 6:35 left in the fourth.
Charpia finished with three TD passes and also ran for a score.
Dutch Fork 58, Irmo 0
No. 1 Dutch Fork recorded their second straight blowout victory.
The game was called in the fourth quarter after the stadium was cleared as a precaution for an incident in the stands. Richland County Sheriff’s Department said no shots were fired.
Quarterback Ty Olenchuk was 11-of-15 for 146 yards and three touchdowns. Gage Zirke and Jalin Hyatt each caught two TDs. Zirke had seven catches for 72 yards and Hyatt three for 52.
Blythewood 42, Fairfield Central 22
Jaylon Boyd rushed for 218 yards and four TDs as Blythewood broke open a close game in the second half.
The game was tied 15-15 at halftime but Blythewood scored 27 points in the third quarter. The Bengals defense picked off three passes.
Dreher 28, Gray Collegiate 24
Jermel Sims scored on a TD run with 25 seconds left to help the Blue Devils to their first win of the year.
Gray Collegiate moved it to the 50-yard line before time ran out.
The Blue Devils trailed 16-0 before Riches McDaniel to cut the margin to 16-7 in the second quarter.
Dreher took a 21-16 lead in the fourth quarter on a Ryan Campbell to Trevon Dreher pass. But the War Eagles answered with a score to make 24-21 with 5:34 left.
Da Da Washington had 208 yards rushing and a TD and Campbell threw for 150 yards for the Blue Devils.
Hunter Helms threw for 285 yards and two TDs in the loss. Kyser Samuel had 13 catches for 247 yards and two TDs.
River Bluff 65, Pelion 6
The Gators moved to 3-0, their best start in school history.
Braden Walker rushed for 150 yards and three scores and Antonio Gantt had two scores.
Westwood 40, Lower Richland 12
Quarterback Ahmon Green threw four touchdowns to four different receivers as Westwood moved to 3-0 on the season.
Cam Atkins had one of those TD catches and also ran for one.
Airport 21, Swansea 20
Dwayne Lewis, Brandon Caughman and Zach Roberts scored TDs in Airport’s win over Swansea.
The Tigers cut the lead to 21-20 on Greg Williams’ interception return for TD but missed the extra point. Airport ran out the clock with a big drive after that.
White Knoll 49, Keenan 20
Quarterback Aveon Smith rushed for three scores and Jamais Holloway had two in the Timberwolves’ second straight win.
Holloway finished with 101 yards for White Knoll. Smith had 170 yards of offense and also threw a TD pass.
Chapin 27, Lugoff-Elgin 14
Taison Thomas rushed for 109 yards and a TD and four Chapin players ran for scores.
Richland Northeast 21, Crestwood 20
Josh Boyd threw three TD passes, including the game-winner with about seven minutes left to Ty’Sean Osby to give the Cavaliers their first win of the year.
Osby had two TD catches and Mike Reynolds had one.
Cardinal Newman 20, Heathwood Hall 8
Shanye Monsanto rushed for 112 yards and a TD, and quarterback AJ Depalma threw for more than 200 yards for Cardinal Newman.
Depalma finished with 213 yards in the air and he also rushed for a score.
Alex Lewis had Heathwood’s lone score.
Hartsville 35, Camden 21
Tiyon Evans returned from injured and had 190 yards of total offense and three TDs for Hartsville
Bryce Jeffcoat had 258 yards and three scores in the loss for Camden.
Newberry 41, Batesburg-Leesville 39
Ahmorae Wilmore’s 1-yard touchdown with 4:01 left helped Newberry past Batesburg-Leesville.
Wilmore finished with 215 yards and two touchdowns. As a team, Newberry rushed for 418 yards.
Newberry led 35-20 in the third quarterback but the Panthers scored 19 straight points and Tay Wilson’s 34-yard run put B-L up 39-35 with 5:47 left. Wilson finished with 131 yards and three TDs.
Thursday
AC Flora 45, Columbia 12
Quarterback Matthew Jamison accounted for three touchdowns as the Falcons defeated Columbia at Benedict College. It was the first win for second-year coach Collin Drafts and snapped the Falcons’ 13-game losing streak.
A.C. Flora went 0-10 last season and began the year with losses to Beaufort and Union County.
Columbia scored on its first drive when Jo Puch hit Jaylin Broadnax for a touchdown to make it 6-0. But Quincy Riley returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to give the Falcons a 7-6 lead. A.C. Flora made it 13-6 on Josh Heatly TD run and the Falcons never looked back.
Jamison threw a pair of TDs, including one to Riley, and also ran for a score.
Fox Creek 33, C.A. Johnson 6
Jatonious Butler ran for three touchdowns as Fox Creek moved to 2-0 on the season.
The game was the first one at Richland One’s new district stadium at Keenan. C.A. Johnson led 6-0 but the Predators scored the game’s final 33 points.
