Airport High School will be losing one of its top assistant coaches.

Preston Deaver will be leaving the school to become the head football coach at Edisto High School. The move was made official Wednesday.

Deaver replaces Chris Carter, who stepped down after three seasons to concentrate on athletic director duties. Carter was 7-21 the past three years at Edisto, which competes in Region 5-3A with likes of Gilbert, Pelion and Strom Thurmond.

“It is a dream come true and wanted it for a long time since I started this. Thrilled for the opportunity,” Deaver said. “Noticed them (Edisto) from afar and like they are in rural area and smaller than 4A and 5A schools I have coached at. Great mix of kids down there and excited to see what we can do there.”

It will be Deaver’s first football head coaching opportunity. The Ridge View High School grad played football for current Airport coach Kirk Burnett in high school and joined the Eagles’ coaching staff six years ago. He was the offensive line coach and helped with offensive coordinator duties at Airport.

Deaver also coached at Ridge View, Brookland-Cayce and Blythewood.

“He has been best support during the process and great motivator. I’m thankful for him,” Deaver said of Burnett.

Deaver plans to meet with his new team Friday. Spring football practice starts next week across the state and Deaver hopes get things going by May 6.
