C.A. Johnson football coach leaving for program in North Carolina
Stephen Roberson is headed back to North Carolina.
The C.A. Johnson football coach has been approved as the new coach at Purnell Swett High School in Maxton, N.C. Roberson replaces Robbie Brown, who served as school’s interim coach last season after Jon Sherman left to take over at West Bladen. The Robesonian was the first to report of Roberson’s hiring.
This will be Roberson’s third head coaching job in North Carolina. He coached at South Roberson (2012-13) and then Westover for three years before taking the job at C.A. Johnson.
Roberson went 7-25 in three season as the Hornets coach and had his best year this season when C.A. Johnson went 4-7 and made it to the Class 2A playoffs.
C.A. Johnson will be moving back to Class A next year in the SC High School League 2020-22 realignment and play in newly- refurbished Bolden Stadium. The Hornets haven’t had a winning season since 2009, when they went 7-4 and lost in the first round of the playoffs to Calhoun County.
““We are looking to fill the position as soon as possible,” C.A. Johnson assistant athletic director Joseph Melvin said. “However, we are looking for a coach that can continue the rebuilding process that coach Roberson started. The coach will need to be the right fit for our football program and to our students.”
The C.A. Johnson coaching position opening is the first in the Midlands this year.
