Former Gamecocks QB now a coach with Midlands high school program
Corey Jenkins is getting into high school coaching.
The former South Carolina quarterback has joined the Cardinal Newman football staff as a defensive assistant. Jenkins spent the past two seasons as running backs and tight ends coach at South Carolina State.
Jenkins also was the assistant strength and conditioning coach at South Carolina from 2016-18.
Jenkins, a three-sport standout at Dreher High School, was a first-round selection in the 1999 Major League Baseball Draft by the Boston Red Sox and was later traded to the Chicago White Sox organization. He played four seasons in professional baseball and made it to Double-A Birmingham.
After his baseball career, Jenkins returned to football and was a two-time Junior College All-American at Garden City Community College before signing at the University of South Carolina. He played two seasons and was the Gamecocks’ starting quarterback in 2002. He had almost 2,000 yards from scrimmage and 11 touchdowns as a senior.
The Miami Dolphins picked Jenkins as a linebacker in the sixth round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He played two seasons with Miami and also had contracts with Chicago, Carolina and Green Bay before finishing his career with Winnipeg of the Canadian Football League. With the Dolphins, current USC coach Will Muschamp was Jenkins’ position coach.
Cardinal Newman will open up its season Sept. 4 at Augusta Christian.
