SCISA roundup, scores: Hammond, Heathwood Hall pick up season-opening victories
The Hammond football team is missing a lot of its star power on defense from last year, but it didn’t show Friday night in the 2020 season opener.
The Skyhawks shut down Ben Lippen for three-and-half quarters on their way to a 35-7 victory.
Hammond had to replace nine starters on defense, including South Carolina signees Jordan Burch and Alex Huntley, but didn’t miss a beat against the Falcons.
“We challenged them. We said, ‘Guys, our defense isn’t going to look the same,’” Hammond coach Erik Kimrey said. “We don’t have four erasers on defense. We all are going to have to pick it up and play a part of it.”
CJ Stokes was the workhorse on offense, running for 119 yards and three scores, including a leaping grab over a defender to get the Skyhawks going in the first half.
Quarterback Jack Weston rushed for 112 yards and a TD and also was 8-of-13 for 74 yards passing.
Whit Muschamp, son of Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp, saw his first varsity action in the second half and threw a TD pass to Seth Kirby in the fourth quarter.
Ben Lippen’s lone score came late in the game on Chase Martin’s 80-yard pass to Chandler Brooks.
Hammond is at Porter Gaud next week. Ben Lippen plays Heathwood Hall.
Heathwood Hall 21, Laurence Manning 14
Ronnie Porter ran for two second-half touchdowns and Josh Gary sealed it with a 20-yard interception return for a score as Heathwood Hall withstood a late Laurence Manning rally to hold on for a 21-14 victory in the season opener.
Porter scored on runs of 14 and 24 yards in the third quarter on his way to finishing with 120 yards. Gary pinned the Swampcats at the 1-yard line in the middle of the fourth quarter before stepping in from an errant pass a couple of plays later to make it 21-0 with 6:17 remaining.
Laurence Manning added two Nolan Osteen touchdown runs in the final 2:10, but the final onside kick didn’t travel 10 yards, allowing Heathwood Hall to run out the clock.
The Highlanders came away with three fumble recoveries inside their own 21-yard line in the first half to help keep things scoreless in the first half.
“That’s a very good football team and we’re very fortunate to get this win,” Heathwood Hall coach Danny Lewis said. “We didn’t play very well offensively but we made a couple of plays when we had to.”
Andrew Jackson 48, Northside Christian 16
Andrew Jackson outscored Northside 30-0 in the second half to take the opening week win. Quarterback Max McKenna had a touchdown pass to Charlie Compton the Crusaders and Luke Cochran scored on a special teams play.
