SCISA roundup, scores: Hammond wins home opener. Richard Winn, Northside roll
Hammond was coming off an open week, but with the way the Skyhawks came out in the first half against Wilson Hall, it didn’t seem to slow them down.
CJ Stokes ran for two touchdowns, Cam Scott added a rushing and receiving touchdown and Aiden Canzater, Whit Muschamp and Jack McCall added scores as well to lead Hammond to a dominant 47-7 victory over the Barons Friday night.
“We played sharp,” Hammond coach Erik Kimrey said. “We were off last week and sort of challenged everybody to let’s get better. We gave them a couple of days off to get fresh and I think that showed tonight.”
Hammond (3-0) was playing its first home game of the season and honored its seniors at halftime. By that point, the Skyhawks held a 40-0 advantage and the officials had already decided on a running clock.
After losing all-star defensive players Jordan Burch, Alex Huntley and Saul Diaz to the college ranks, the Skyhawks defense hasn’t missed a beat. They’ve allowed 21 points in three games and limited the Barons to 53 first-half yards and two first downs.
Burch and Huntley, playing at South Carolina now, were on hand to see the spirited performance.
“We’ve gotten a lot better,” senior defensive lineman James Kitchens said. “We don’t have any huge stars on defense, but we’ve worked together as a team and build some chemistry.”
The Skyhawks scored on all six first-half possessions and had over 330 yards at the break. Stokes, the junior running back, had eight carries for 100 yards and touchdown runs of 2 and 39 yards in just a half of action.
Scott, who had 3 catches for 86 yards, opened the scoring with a 4-yard run and later added a 15-yard TD strike from Jack Weston.
Weston threw for 116 yards on 7-of-8 passing and the touchdown. Whit Muschamp played a lot of the second quarter and all of the second half in relief. He finished 4-of-8 for 76 yards and a 39-yard touchdown pass to Canzater. Muschamp’s 23-yard scoring run capped the first half scoring.
McCall only had three carries but finished with 70 yards and a 14-yard touchdown run.
