Dutch Fork standout, Clemson signee wins prestigious Gatorade football honor

Jarvis Green picked up one of the state’s top football awards on Friday.

The Dutch Fork High School running back and Clemson football signee was named S.C. Gatorade Player of the Year. Green is the first Dutch Fork player to win the award that began in 1985. He is the third-straight future Clemson player to win the award. Daniel’s Trent Pearman won it the past two seasons.

Other future Clemson players to win the award include Derion Kendrick (2017), Daquan Bowers (2007), Willy Korn (2005-06), Roscoe Crosby (2000) and Stacy Seegars (1988). Kendrick and Korn finished their playing careers at other schools.

Green is the first area player to win the Gatorade award since Spring Valley’s Leon Hart in 2003 and Lexington’s Demtris Summers in 2001. The Midlands swept the state’s top two football awards with Camden’s Xzavier McLeod being named Mr. Football. Green was a Mr. Football finalist.

“It’s just a blessing to win the Gatorade award and it’s just been a goal of mine to win this award,” Green told The State. “And to see my name on this award, it just means a lot to me. I couldn’t do it without my teammates, coaches and family. I’m really just thankful for them.”

This season, Green rushed for 2,272 yards, 33 touchdowns and also caught 36 passes for 527 yards and six scores despite missing two games because of injury.

Green finished his career with 4,608 yards and 78 rushing touchdowns, both second all-time behind 2014 Mr. Football Matt Colburn, who had a standout career at Wake Forest and played last year in the USFL. Green also was picked to play in the Shrine Bowl.

Off the field, Green has a 3.55 GPA and volunteered locally with the Adopt-a-Highway program and with Special Olympics. He also donated his time as a mentor for at-risk youth as art of the Faithful Black Men of America.

Green committed to Clemson on Dec. 13 and signed with the Tigers a week later. He will enroll in June. The senior is playing for the Dutch Fork basketball team and had 15 points in his first game on Tuesday.
