First look at the five finalists for this year’s SC Mr. Football award
The five finalists for South Carolina’s Mr. Football were announced on Wednesday.
The finalists are Hampton County’s Zion Dobson, Hillcrest’s Avery McFadden, Northwestern’s Turbo Richard, Dillon’s Josiah Thompson and Daniel’s Watson Young.
Mr. Football is an honor given to the top public school high school football senior football player in the state and based on performance on and off the field. The winner will be announced at halftime of the Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl in Myrtle Beach on Dec. 9.
Camden’s Xzavier McLeod won the award last year.
ABOUT THE MR FOOTBALL FINALISTS
▪ Zion Dobson, Hampton County: Running back has more than 3,000 rushing yards in his career, including 1,570 yards and 21 touchdowns this season.
▪ Avery McFadden, Hillcrest: Georgia State receiver commit has 198 catches in his career and recently set the school record for receiving yards (2,783) and touchdowns (47).
▪ Turbo Richard, Northwestern::Boston College commit has three straight 1,000-yard seasons for the Trojans and 4,108 rushing yards, 53 total touchdowns. This year, Richard has 1,655 all-purpose yards and 18 touchdowns. He is the 17th-ranked prospect in SC, according to 247Sports.
▪ Josiah Thompson, Dillon: One of the top offensive linemen in the country who has committed to South Carolina. On3 ranks Thompson as a five-star prospect and ninth-overall recruit in the country for the Class of 2024. Thompson has graded out at 93 percent for his career and averages five pancake blocks per game.
▪ Watson Young, Daniel: Appalachian State commit has played since he was a freshman and Lions’ starting offensive left tackle this season. Daniel is averaging 470 yards per game.
