Notebook: QB Ziegler hopes to shine in return to Ridge View
D’Marco Ziegler played a big role in helping turn the Keenan football team around last season and hopes to do the same in his second stint at Ridge View.
The senior quarterback moved back with his mom to the Ridge View school district where he spent his freshman and sophomore seasons. Last year, Ziegler played at Keenan and helped the Raiders to the school’s first state appearance.
“There is a lot of potential on this team,” Ziegler said last week. “Hopefully, we can get something this year, get to the playoffs and make a deep run.”
The Blazers haven’t had a winning season in seven years and brought in coach Perry Parks from Lakewood to replace Raymond Jennings, who is now a defensive coordinator at Lugoff-Elgin. Parks played under River Bluff’s David Bennett at Coastal Carolina and has brought a lot of energy into the program.
Parks said Ziegler is battling with Jaylen Nelson for the team’s top quarterback spot. The first-year coach liked what he saw from both quarterbacks during Tuesday’s scrimmage against Sumter and Lower Richland.

Game change
The Westside at Lexington football game scheduled for Aug. 28 will be played at River Bluff High because renovations to Lexington’s Stadium aren’t complete.
The renovations should be done in time for the Wildcats’ next home, which is Sept. 25 against Carolina Forest.
Position switch for Swansea’s Walker
Chance Walker was one of Swansea’s top playmakers last season, and he will have an opportunity to have the ball in his hands more this season.
Walker will be moving to quarterback after being a threat receiving and running last season. He led the team with 1,343 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns last season and was second in receiving with 31 catches for 509 yards.
College commitments
Hammond senior forward Chevez Goodwin committed to College of Charleston over the weekend.
As a junior, Goodwin averaged 12.6 points, 9.4 rebounds and shot 55 percent in helping the Skyhawks to the SCISA Class 3A championship.
Blythewood pitcher/infielder Justin Greider committed to USC Lancaster following the Palmetto Games over the weekend.

Both schools will be using the Nevco LED video display board, which is 17.19 feet by 25.16 feet. The video boards will provide replays, messages from sponsors and the booster club.
