Williams rushes for three TDs, lifts Cardinal Newman past Pelion
At Lexington, Sean Williams ran for three touchdowns to give Doug Dutton a win in his debut as Cardinal Newman defeated Pelion 37-6 on Saturday at the Battle on the Bluff at River Bluff High.
It was a matchup of two new coaches as Dutton took over at Cardinal Newman, and Dann Holland is in his first year at Pelion.
But outside of Richard Kollie’s 69-yard touchdown run, which got Pelion within 17-6 in the second quarter, the Cardinals were in control for most of the game. Williams rushed for 67 yards and Tarence Tyler had 66 as the Cardinals outgained Pelion 257-86.
Pelion turned the ball over seven times.
TURNING POINT
With Cardinal Newman already leading 10-0 in the second quarter, Pelion fumbled on its own 1-yard line. One play later, Williams took it in for a touchdown as C-N took a 17-0 lead and never looked back.
KEY PERFORMERS
Sean Williams: Cardinal Newman running back scored three touchdowns and rushed for 67 yards.
Offensive line: Cardinals’ offensive line wore down Pelion in the second half as they rushed for 197 yards.
Octavious Green: Pelion linebacker was easily team’s best player Saturday. Was in the backfield on numerous occasions putting pressure on the Cardinals quarterbacks or stopping the run.
OBSERVATIONS
Sloppy play: It many ways it was a typical first game for both teams as they combined to turn it over 10 times in the game. Cardinal Newman corrected much of its mistakes in the second half and took control of the line of scrimmage.
Two-QB system: Cardinal Newman rotated quarterbacks Cam Tringali and Parker Dubois. Both had their moments with Tringali more of a passing threat and Dubois as a runner.
Work in progress: Holland knew his team was going to be a work in progress and it definitely showed against Cardinal Newman. Too many turnovers and mistakes will give Holland, who won two state titles at Hunter-Kinard-Tyler, plenty things to work on as they get ready for next week.
THEY SAID IT
“The second was ugly. I wasn’t real happy with our execution. We will iron those things out, hopefully. But overall, I thought we kind of imposed our will a little bit. That’s what we are trying to do. ” – Cardinal Newman coach Doug Dutton
“We (offensive line) started to wear them down and put them in the dirt. It showed the rest of the game. We have a good defense as well. They were all getting off the ball and causing trouble and getting our offense back on the field.” – Cardinal Newman running back Sean Williams.
