Dutch Fork coach Tom Knotts was a little salty after his team’s 51-37 victory over Summerville in the opening round of the Class 4A, Division I playoffs. The top-seeded Silver Foxes wasted a 17-point third quarter lead and had to hold off the Green Wave in the fourth quarter.
Clayton Jones capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive with a 3-yard scoring run to give Dutch Fork (9-3) a 30-13 lead with 4:33 remaining in the third quarter. That set off a flurry of activity that saw the teams combine for six touchdowns in a little more than five minutes of game action.
Summerville (4-8) tied it at 37 on the third play of the fourth quarter, but Ward Hacklin ended that tide quickly.
The senior fielded the ensuing kickoff, eluded a couple of defenders and raced 73 yards for the score.
“We didn’t know who was going to win that game. Whoever got it last I guess,” Knotts said. “We found a way to make one more play than they did.”
Cole Douglas salted things away with a 13-yard scoring run with just less than two minutes remaining.
Dutch Fork will host Dorman next Friday night.
Summerville trailed by 17 early in the third quarter, but rallied to tie the score at 37 on a 1-yard scoring run by Krishaon Jackson and his two-point conversion with 11:16 remaining in the game. On the ensuing kickoff, Hacklin received the short kick and raced 73 yards for the decisive score.
Cole Douglas: The senior Dutch Fork QB again did it all, accounting for 366 yards of total offense and three scores. He finished with 138 yards rushing and 228 passing.
Chris Felder: The Summerville running back finished with 138 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.
Krishaon Jackson: The receiver-turned-quarterback ran for 169 yards and three scores.
5:30: Dutch Fork and Summerville combined to score six touchdowns in a 5:30 span covering the third and fourth quarter.
869: Combined yardage by the teams. Dutch fork finished with 477 and Summerville added 392.
THEY SAID IT
“When I got this job in the summer we came together and never quit on each other. We kept fighting, even tonight down by 17 in the second half. But we fought and had all the momentum. Then we don’t cover our lanes on a kickoff and give up a big play. We don’t give that up, who knows.” – Summerville coach Joe Call
“Cole (Douglas) is a little inconsistent but he plays hard. He did some good things, he had a big pass completion at the end and he ran it nearly 30 times.” – Dutch Fork coach Tom Knotts
