Dutch Fork staves off Summerville for win in first round of 4A playoffs
Dutch Fork coach Tom Knotts was a little salty after his team’s 51-37 victory over Summerville in the opening round of the Class 4A, Division I playoffs. The top-seeded Silver Foxes wasted a 17-point third quarter lead and had to hold off the Green Wave in the fourth quarter.
Clayton Jones capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive with a 3-yard scoring run to give Dutch Fork (9-3) a 30-13 lead with 4:33 remaining in the third quarter. That set off a flurry of activity that saw the teams combine for six touchdowns in a little more than five minutes of game action.
Summerville (4-8) tied it at 37 on the third play of the fourth quarter, but Ward Hacklin ended that tide quickly.
The senior fielded the ensuing kickoff, eluded a couple of defenders and raced 73 yards for the score.
“We didn’t know who was going to win that game. Whoever got it last I guess,” Knotts said. “We found a way to make one more play than they did.”
Cole Douglas salted things away with a 13-yard scoring run with just less than two minutes remaining.
Dutch Fork will host Dorman next Friday night.

THEY SAID IT
“When I got this job in the summer we came together and never quit on each other. We kept fighting, even tonight down by 17 in the second half. But we fought and had all the momentum. Then we don’t cover our lanes on a kickoff and give up a big play. We don’t give that up, who knows.” – Summerville coach Joe Call
“Cole (Douglas) is a little inconsistent but he plays hard. He did some good things, he had a big pass completion at the end and he ran it nearly 30 times.” – Dutch Fork coach Tom Knotts
